Design for Manufacturing Services
A product is not ready for manufacturing just because the CAD model looks complete. Design for Manufacturing checks whether the geometry, material, tolerances, assembly strategy, and documentation match the process that will actually make the part.
DFM Review Before Tooling, Quoting, or Production
Manufacturing risk becomes expensive when it is discovered after a mold is cut, a fixture is built, or a supplier has already planned the production route. IAEngineering reviews product designs before that point, helping teams identify geometry that is difficult to mold, expensive to machine, unstable in sheet metal, hard to assemble, or under-defined in drawings.
The goal is not to make every part cheap at the expense of performance. The goal is to make the design intentional: easy enough to manufacture, controlled where tolerances matter, relaxed where they do not, and documented clearly enough that suppliers can quote and produce it with fewer assumptions.
Injection Molding DFM
Wall thickness, ribs, bosses, snaps, draft angles, shutoffs, parting line risk, sink marks, undercuts, cosmetic surfaces, and tooling direction.
CNC Machining DFM
Tool access, internal radii, setup count, deep pockets, thread choices, material stock, tolerance callouts, finishes, and inspection needs.
Sheet Metal DFM
Bend radius, reliefs, flange length, flat patterns, hardware insertion, weld strategy, enclosure assembly, and bend sequence constraints.
Additive Manufacturing DFM
Orientation, wall thickness, support risk, material behavior, surface quality, inserts, post-processing, and transition to low-volume production.
Assembly Review
Fastener access, installation sequence, datum strategy, maintenance access, serviceability, interface tolerances, and human assembly steps.
Supplier Package Review
2D drawings, BOMs, revision notes, critical dimensions, material specification, finish notes, inspection requirements, and open supplier questions.
DFM Process
A focused DFM review can be done as a standalone engagement or as part of a larger product development project.
Collect Inputs
Review CAD files, drawings, target process, volumes, materials, cost targets, functional requirements, and known supplier constraints.
Identify Manufacturing Risks
Flag geometry, tolerances, features, assembly decisions, or documentation gaps that can increase cost, delay quoting, or create production defects.
Recommend Engineering Changes
Provide practical design changes with the reason behind each change, not just a list of warnings.
Update CAD and Documentation
When included in scope, implement the changes in SolidWorks and update drawings, STEP files, notes, or BOM references.
What A DFM Package Can Include
| Review Area | Typical Output |
|---|---|
| Geometry | Feature-level comments, screenshots, revised CAD, and notes on high-risk details. |
| Tolerances | Critical dimension review, tolerance relaxation opportunities, GD&T suggestions, and inspection notes. |
| Manufacturing route | Process fit, material considerations, supplier questions, and alternative routes if the initial process is risky. |
| Handoff | Updated drawing pack, STEP exports, BOM notes, manufacturing assumptions, and open issues to close with the supplier. |
Best timing: request DFM before committing to mold design, CNC batch production, sheet metal tooling, or a large prototype build. Earlier review usually means simpler changes.
DFM FAQ
Can you work with my manufacturer?
Yes. We can review supplier feedback, prepare technical responses, and update the design package so the design intent is clear.
Do I need finished CAD before DFM?
No. Early DFM can be useful during concept development, especially when the manufacturing process will strongly shape the part design.
Is DFM the same as cost reduction?
Cost reduction is one outcome, but DFM also addresses quality, reliability, assembly, supplier clarity, inspection, and production risk.
